Elementals

Elementals are particularly prevalent in the Isles, where they manifested from the remnants of divinity the gods left behind. They are magical in nature. The four primary types of elementals are earth, water, fire, and wind. Some mixed elementals exist (such as storm, lava, or ice) but their presence tends to be limited to locations of deep and intense concentrations of magical intent.

Elemental Kingdoms

There are three elemental kingdoms with organized leaders. Water elementals are the only type that have no central leadership. They exist in springs, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls in the Isles and protect themselves and their land. Other elementals have a loose organization and hierarchy, detailed below:

The Eternal Flame's Realm: Fire elementals live here. The Realm lies in the Sunken World, far from humans, elves, dwarves, or anyone else but the demons who inhabit it. Fire elementals are quick to anger with hot tempers. They lash out against others and revel in violence. The Eternal Flame is a massive fire elemental who rules over the others from a lava-palace. Fire elementals are coveted for their everburning heat by the inventors in the Isles. Some have been known to be captured and enslaved to power forges, bellows, and even engines.

The Thrones of Wind: Air elementals exist in a hierarchy. They serve either the North, East, South, or Western Windlord. Windlords can create new elementals from the air, and these primitive air spirits are called Sylphs. Sylphs are spirits of the air, creatures of high mountaintops, fierce winds, and scouring tempests. As large, glassy humanoids who can morph their bodies into different shapes or turn invisible, sylphs spend their time cavorting in the breezes and wandering from place to place. They are tricksters at heart. Fickle, playful creatures, they are easily scorned. The Western Windlord Erasmyth lives in Orthellon, a floating set of islands above the ocean.

Hand of Clay: Earth elementals once shook the earth in Oros and Aldemere, but have since all reformed into one single elemental called the Hand of Clay. The Hand slumbers with its fist tightly curled around the liferoot of Aslaug, the world tree referenced in The Weald.
