Overview
Ships steer clear from the Kraken’s Eye, a territory in the center of the Isles controlled by the mighty Kraken, Kog'sumoth. In the year 1032 AM, the Kraken was slain by the heroic, legendary warrior Hejong of Thrain.
The Devourer's Origins
Kog'sumoth is immortal and his origins span back to the beginning of time. He was one of the three original sea-beasts (including Orochi and Devondalevi) who slipped through the Veil into Ilisara unnoticed. As an ancient, immortal devourer, Kog'sumoth is quite special; his innards can sustain life for up to two weeks, and his body has own ecosystem of tiny, diminutive peoples living inside. Most notable of these populations are the Karkoon and the Axols.
Kog'sumoth is known as the Devourer. He is a highly magical creature. He grows, grows, and grows via the consumption of other living things, and draws power from consuming magic items. Ilisara's oceans are littered with magic items lost by the gods and mortals over the years.
Appearance
While some depictions show Kog'sumoth as a giant squid, earlier accounts of the beast described it as having spindly appendages like a crab’s. The reality is quite horrific – Kog'sumoth has both.

Kog'sumoth is approximately two miles long in length. He is much larger than a single ship, or even an entire fleet. Some stories say that unlucky sailors have mistaken the beast for an island and tried to land on it. Bubbles, dangerous currents, and the appearance of new land are all signs of underwater volcanic activity, and that’s where Kog'sumoth thrives.
Normally a deep-ocean dweller, Kog'sumoth can sense strong life forces within 100 miles of his position resting on the sea floor. He is particularly attuned to concentrations of sentient life, such as shipfuls of humanoids. A single sailor marooned at sea is less likely to draw Kog'sumoth's attention, while a crew of 60 sailors definitely will.
