Spectres are humans with animal features, such as ears, a tail, or even wings. Their personality traits are often derived from the animal they originated as. Fox Spectres are clever and capricious. Cats are easily entertained and sleep often. Wolves are skittish but seek companionship. Spectres do not have any unified ultimate goal or motive. There are only a handful of them left in the Isles, and they are individualistic and pursue their own purposes.
Blessings

Spectres are capable of imbuing individuals with blessings. These blessings are given more readily by some Spectres, and rarely by others. Blessings manifest in prominent physical traits for the Blessed. Spectre-Blessed individuals gain ears, claws, horns, fangs, or even feathers depending on their patron Spectre. Blessings may also augment or shape the personality, likes, and dislikes of individuals if they receive the blessing at a young age. Spectre-Blessed individuals typically have long lives, and they gain a propensity for magic.
History
Spectres are quite rare. They evolved from animals that Awakened when the god of time died eons ago. Because of their origins, they never received a newborn soul, and hunger for soul energy throughout their lives. Spectres feed on the life-force of others to sustain themselves, although they do not always kill their victims. Some Spectres need very little soul energy to live and do little harm by feeding.
Due to their unique origins, Spectres cannot bear offspring through traditional means because it does not attract a newborn soul. Spectres reproduce through memetic exchange. Memetic exchange requires the spiritual, physical, and mental makeup of the partners to combine and form the spark of a new physical life. Typically, the mother and father both contribute parts of their soul to the offspring during copulation. Due to the difficulty of finding compatible partners many Spectres are known to simply adopt Spectre-Blessed and treat them as their own children.
