Origins
In the early years, a god named Esk held domain over magic. He was averse to war and conflict. Seeing the people of Ilisara feuding, he decided to sacrifice himself to gift magic to the world. Esk’s death sent a shockwave worldwide that sparked new capacity for magic in the souls of many living things. His death was so terrifyingly powerful that it tore a hole in the world.
This hole came to be known as the Veil. The Veil had strange properties. It was isolated in the center of the ocean, and it shimmered and shook for days until an island slowly rose around it. The Veil began to spit out alien creatures and people from other worlds. Esk’s dying breath fogged around the island and shrouded it from sight. Unbeknownst to all, a tiny fragment of him lived on to bring order to the chaos that his death caused.
Esk's Isle

Esk's Isle grew. Wild overgrowth consumed the entire rock until it became a magical forest. The forest held dangerous living plants, strange obelisks and temples, and a magical stairway to Esk's own observatory. From the observatory, all of the sources of magic in the world could be viewed.
The island was inhabited by large, gargantuan beasts (such as a Giganotosaurus) and other primordial life forms; these were fragmented memories of the gods' first attempts at life, brought back by Esk's bout of creation.
The remaining gods paid the Veil little mind until immensely powerful beings from other realms traveled through it. Three notable ones were Devondalevi, Kog’sumoth, and Orochi. The need to protect the Veil and prevent anyone from traveling into or out of it became apparent. The gods created (or perhaps coerced) monstrous beasts to prowl the waters around the Veil and keep it safe.
The Veil's Reception in Ilisara
Today, the Veil is a shifting mass of fog that hungrily pulls in any ships that venture nearby. Seldom do creatures who enter the Veil ever leave it. Sometimes, strange and fantastical items or creatures wash up on Ilisara's shores, and it is speculated that these come from inside the Veil. When the Afterlife collided with Ilisara during Armageddon, it caused the Veil to spit out scattered remnants of alien technology, people, and creatures all over Ilisara.
The Veil is mysterious. Very few people in Ilisara know anything about what it's true purpose is.
Some legends say that the Mermaids have a city on the border of the Veil. Most are skeptical of this legend, for the Veil pierces through the water itself. How could they possibly have a city on the edge of such chaos? This legend is known to be true by only a few — the ancient Citadel of Ten Thousand Pearls rests on the edge of the Veil, inhabited by the Siren Queen Shaelyn.
